Beaujolais, France
Yann Bertrand is the son of a vigneron in the Beaujolais town of Fleurie, but wasn’t interested in winemaking until he became immersed in the natural wine scene of the French Alps. Eventually, he found himself learning how to make wine from Beajolais legends like Jean Foillard and Yvonn Metras. Some of his wines are made with purchased fruit, but Yann holds fast to organic and biodynamic winemaking principles, and is highly selective with these grapes (even picks them himself). The wines are fermented in concrete, carbonic, and whole cluster. No sulfur is used at any point in the winemaking process.
This wine hails from a single-hectare parcel in the 'Bastys' area, which is composed of deep granite. Yann implements alternating plowing and permanent inter-row grassing. Grapes are exclusively hand harvested in small 300kg skips, with rigorous parcel sorting. Strict carbonic maceration (without juice) for 20 days. No added sulfur or yeast. Wine ages for 8 months, 80% in 225-liter barrels and 20% in vats. Racking and bottling, unfiltered and following the cycle of the moon.
